English version(英語バージョン)

Hello, I’m Rei. Today, I want to share how you can enjoy the stunning autumn foliage and delicious local cuisine at Mount Takao, a perfect day trip destination just an hour from Tokyo. Even as a beginner hiker, I found it easy to explore solo, making it an ideal spot for anyone looking for a relaxing adventure.

Easy Access via Keio Line

Mount Takao is easily accessible from Shinjuku via the Keio Line, taking about 50 minutes to reach Takaosanguchi Station. From there, it’s a short five-minute walk to the cable car station. The train ride offers scenic views, especially during the autumn season when the foliage is vibrant.

Cable Car Up, Lift Down: An Efficient Climb

The cable car takes you effortlessly from the base of Mount Takao to an elevation of about 400 meters in just six minutes. The ride costs 480 yen one way or 930 yen round trip (2024 prices). The views from the cable car are breathtaking, with trees painted in reds and yellows making you feel like you’re floating through a colorful forest. For the descent, I recommend taking the lift for a thrilling ride down. It takes about 12 minutes and costs 490 yen one way or 950 yen round trip. The lift offers a refreshing breeze and close-up views of the foliage. If you’re afraid of heights like I am, consider taking the lift up and the cable car down instead.

Dressing for Comfort

Mount Takao is relatively easy to climb, but proper attire is essential for comfort:

  • Comfortable walking shoes: Sneakers are sufficient if you’re using the cable car.
  • Layered clothing: It’s cooler at the summit, so wear layers you can adjust.
  • Hat: Protects against sun exposure.
  • Water: Available for purchase at vending machines along the way.

These essentials ensure a pleasant visit. Even schoolchildren come here on field trips, so it’s truly accessible for all ages.

The Route from Cable Car to Summit

Once you disembark from the cable car, it takes about 40 minutes to an hour to reach the summit. The path is well-maintained and suitable for beginners. There are several staircases along the way and plenty of spots to rest and enjoy snacks or meals. The autumn scenery is a colorful masterpiece created by nature itself.

Best Time for Autumn Foliage

The peak season for autumn leaves at Mount Takao is mid-November. During this time, the mountain is ablaze with red, yellow, and orange hues. To avoid crowds, visit on weekdays if possible. I started my hike early on a weekday morning and was able to enjoy a peaceful ascent with fewer people around.

Stunning Views from the Summit

On clear days, you can see Mount Fuji from Mount Takao’s summit! Seeing Fuji-san clearly made me feel that my effort was worthwhile. The hike takes about 40 minutes to an hour but offers a rewarding sense of achievement.
